Sure Start Under Threat
In the past both David Cameron and Nick Clegg pledged to protect Sure Start saying it was a vital and successful service. But according to a survey released by 4Children and the Daycare Trust - 250 Sure Start centres are projected to close by the end of 2011. Closures on this scale would put an enormous amount of pressure on parents and families who rely on the service for their children’s care and education. Sure Start centres face a real-terms cut to their funding of nine per cent by 2014/15.
Labour says: there is an alternative. We need to reduce the deficit, but Labour would do it fairly. That means continuing to invest in our children’s futures and protecting families.
A universal service, accessible to all, is the best way to provide the support to families.
This Tory-led Government is wrecking the network of services and facilities that families rely on every day. Send Cameron and Clegg a message and stand up for Sure Start centres in your community by pledging your support today.
